IR Illuminators for Night Vision — The No-BS Buyer’s Guide
IR Illuminator Complete Guide — Stop Buying the Wrong One
The most common mistake new night vision users make? Buying an illuminator that’s too bright and triggers autogating the moment it’s turned on.
The Weltool LH2 is the perfect example. Cheap and popular, but brutally overpowered. Someone on Reddit put it most directly: “Shit is bright. Almost too bright where on a full moon night, it’ll make my tubes autogate.” Another user was even blunter: “It’s too fucking bright where it makes my nods autogate. But this depends on how lit the environment is.”
Weltool is cheap, sure, but it’s too bright. Some users’ solution is drilling a hole in the lens cap — “I drilled a hole in the cap for the illuminator… Caps on indoors, caps off outdoors.” Crude fix, but it works.
Real Performance of Military Devices
Spending $1,300 on an ATPIAL-C gets what exactly? “Anemic at best, a SureFire Vampire head does a better job at illuminating downrange” — The Firearm Blog’s exact words. Thirteen hundred bucks for an “anemic” illuminator. Money wasted.
PEQ-15’s illuminator? “Lackluster and grainy.” MAWL’s reviews say “much cleaner and most intuitive.” But MAWL has one problem — weight. MAWL C1+ with battery is 11.1oz, NGAL is only 4.9oz. This isn’t a two-three ounce difference, it’s a 2.2x weight gap.
DBAL I2’s illuminator? Someone on Reddit said it straight: “sucks (relatively speaking).” There’s also an operation issue: “2 banks of switches which makes it harder to get the combo you want in the dark.” Finding switches in the dark is already hard, two banks of switches is harder.
LA5B is bright, but “almost too bright for good PID under a clip on.” NGAL? “Disappointment with how much of a halo there is” — too much halo.
Real Range vs Marketing Range
Kiji marketing says 800 yards. What does someone who’s used it for two years say? “In the wild, max reach more or less is 200 yards.” 800 yards becomes 200 yards, marketing at 75% off. Though he also said, 200 yards is enough, no complaints.
Kiji-3 mounted on a high-power spotting scope can indeed hit 800 yards — The Firearm Blog tested it. But nobody hunts with a spotting scope.
Vampire? “You’ll get maybe 125-150 out of it? But it will be a big flood of IR on the ground too so… has a lot of signature.” 125-150 yards, and a big patch of IR light on the ground, giving away position. There’s another problem: muzzle gas after shooting scatters the IR light, “the gas from the barrel scatters the light from the surefire and can obscure your target after a couple rounds.”
Chinese Kiji clones are the worst: “Only 1 power level, wayyy too many artifacts and dark spots.” Only one power setting, dark spots and artifacts everywhere. Don’t buy.
Wavelength and Beam Angle Choices
850nm or 940nm? This depends on what animals are being hunted.
Someone using an 850nm illuminator spooked a herd of elk at 392 yards — “many of the elk stopped feeding to look up and then look directly at me” (rokslide.com). But another data point: 850nm used on 1000+ animals, only two got spooked (sniperhoglights.com).
Coyotes are much more sensitive than deer: “Coyotes around here (central IL) seem to be very sensitive to the IR glow” (predatormasters.com). For coyotes, 940nm is safer.
What about beam angle? Someone bought a Kiji 10-degree SENDERO, regretted it: foreground vegetation too bright causing autogating, “Think of it looking down a tunnel with a flashlight.” Should have bought the 3-degree.
Tubes Determine Illumination Needs
L3 filmless white phosphor tubes barely need IR illumination, 70% brightness is enough. But old Omni VII tubes do need illumination. Before buying an illuminator, first figure out the tube model.
Value Choice
Want performance better than MAWL but don’t want to pay MAWL money? Luna paired with DBAL A3, the whole setup around $1,750, “will smoke a MAWL in performance” — Sniper’s Hide forum’s exact words. Needs adapter, tail cap switch, Unity Taps Sync or Taps Pro. Hassle, but worth it.
Safety Warning
- Someone left IR laser and illuminator on inside a car, reflections caused eye damage — Reddit has the case
- If tube burns happen, use “black box” technique to fix, or flash a bright flashlight a few times to trigger autogating
Choosing an illuminator comes down to three things: tube model, actual range needed, and target animal species. Before heading out, check the night vision hunting laws by state — IR illuminator use has some state-specific restrictions. To understand how illuminators interact with different tube generations, see our night vision technology overview. Don’t get fooled by marketing numbers.
